IBM Israel Science and Technology Limited is better known as IBM Research – Haifa. Since it first opened as the IBM Scientific Center in 1972, the Haifa lab has conducted decades of research that have proved vital to IBM’s success. The lab is one of six research laboratories located outside of the United States, and has close working relationships with IBM Israel and its twin research laboratory in Zurich. In Haifa, 25 percent of the technical staff has doctorate degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or related fields. Employees are actively involved in teaching in Israeli higher education institutions and in supervising post-graduate theses. R&D projects are being executed today in areas such as storage systems, cloud computing, healthcare and life sciences, verification technologies, business transformation, information retrieval, programming environments, optimization technologies, and analytics. IBM HRL has been one of the recognized pioneers of the event processing discipline, starting its activities in this area in 1997. The lab has contributed event processing capabilities to multiple IBM products, the scientific community, and industry activities. It has founded and continues to lead the Event Processing Technical Society (EPTS). The lab also has a very strong distributed computing team. The team pioneered work on very large distributed systems and established the ACM LADIS Workshop in 2007 (see http://ladisworkshop.org/). Since FP4, IBM HRL has participated in and led numerous EU-funded projects and is considered an Israeli leader in FP participation. Five projects are currently coordinated by IBM. Dr. Opher Etzion is the principal investigator of the computational independent event processing model in IBM. Previously he has been lead architect of event processing technology in IBM Websphere, and a Senior Manager in IBM Research division, managed a department that has performed one of the pioneering projects that shaped the area of “event processing”. He is also the chair of EPTS (Event Processing Technical Society). In parallel he serves as an adjunct professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and academic advisor to the MIS department in the Yezreel Valley College; over the years he supervised 6 PhD and 22 MSc theses . He has authored or co-authored more than 80 papers in refereed journals and conferences , on topics related to: active databases, temporal databases, rule-base systems, event processing and autonomic computing, and gave several keynote addresses and tutorials. He is the co-author of Event Processing in Action (with Peter Niblett), a comprehensive technical book about event processing and co-edited the book “Temporal Database – Research and Practice” , Springer-Verlag, 1998. Prior to joining IBM in 1997, he has been a faculty member and Founding Head of the Information Systems Engineering department at the Technion, and held professional and managerial positions in industry and in the Israel Air-Force. He is a senior member of ACM, and has been general chair and program chair of various conferences such as COOPIS 2000 and ACM DEBS 2011. He won several prestigious awards over the years, such as the Israel Air-Force highest award for introduction of new technologies towards widely usage, IBM Outstanding Innovation Award and IBM Corporate Award (the highest IBM award) for the pioneering work on event processing. He was recognized as Distinguished Speaker by ACM.

Dr. Eliezer Dekel is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member and Chief Architect for Distributed Systems in IBM Research – Haifa. In his current role he focuses on developing infrastructure technologies for very large scale distributed systems. He Received the IBM Corporate award for developing DCS (Distribution and Consistency Services), the clustering foundation for WebSphere. He also managed the development of a Peer-to-Peer based distributed bulletin board that supports eventual consistency. This component is now part of WebSphere Virtual

Enterprise and IBM Workload Deployer (IWD). Eliezer Dekel is a steering board member of the European Alliance for Innovations (EAI). He is the editor in chief of ICST Transaction on Financial Systems and the business chair of ICST SIB Council on Future Information Systems. Since joining the Haifa Research Lab in 1992, he has been involved in research in the areas of distributed and fault-tolerant computing, service-oriented technology, and software engineering. In 2007 he initiated together with colleagues the very successful  International Workshop on Large Scale Distributed Systems and Middleware (LADIS). For developing the Agilis technology under EU project CoMiFin he received the EPTS (Event Processing Technical Society), Innovative Application Award (2011). Eliezer has a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in computer science from the University of Minnesota, and a B.Sc. in mathematics from Ben Gurion University, Israel. Prior to joining IBM Research – Haifa, Eliezer served on the faculty of the University of Texas at Dallas computer science department for over ten years.
